Hiring foreign workers in Slovakia

Slovakia's sponsor-side burden sits with the employer or host institution on nearly every useful non-EU work route. The sponsor usually has to report the vacancy or trigger the labour-office step, issue the contract or hosting agreement that defines the route, and stay ready to answer police or labour-office follow-up if the file stalls.

Slovakia's sponsor-side burden sits with the employer or host institution on nearly every useful non-EU work route. The sponsor guide keeps ICT out of the core route list because the legal basis is clear but the English operational guidance found in this run was not strong enough to describe sponsor steps confidently without overfitting from the statute alone. 5Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic — Act No. 404/2011 Coll. on Residence of Foreigners (English translation PDF)

Sponsor-backed routes

Temporary residence for employment (single permit)

Slovak employer

The employer drives the mainstream route by reporting the vacancy, issuing the contract or binding promise, and keeping the labour-market filing coherent until the Foreign Police finishes the case.

  • Report the vacancy to the competent Labour Office before the worker files the residence application.
  • Issue the employment contract or written promise used as proof of purpose of stay.
  • Stay available if the Labour Office or Foreign Police asks for clarification on the role or vacancy.

EU Blue Card

Slovak employer

Blue Card sponsors need a genuinely higher-qualified role, a contract or binding promise for at least one year, and salary that clears the statutory sector-based threshold.

  • Report the high-qualified vacancy to the Central Labour Office before the Blue Card filing.
  • Issue the contract or written promise with at least one year of employment and Blue Card-level pay.
  • Keep the role description consistent with the filed qualification basis and labour-office confirmation.

Temporary residence for research and development

Slovak research institution or university host

The host institution carries the route through the hosting agreement and has to support the file as the named Slovak research host rather than as a generic employer.

  • Issue the hosting agreement accepted for the research-and-development residence route.
  • Confirm the research basis and host status if the authorities ask for supporting detail.
  • Coordinate with the researcher on the post-arrival health-insurance and medical-certificate follow-up.

Work permit for seasonal or other special cases

Slovak employer

Where Slovakia still uses a standalone work permit, the employer has to report the vacancy early enough and often files or supports the labour-office permit stage before residence can be completed.

  • Report the vacancy at least 10 working days before the work-permit filing where that route applies.
  • File the work-permit request directly or support the worker's filing with written consent and route-specific documents.
  • Keep renewal timing under control because the vacancy must be re-reported before a renewal request.

04

Documents

Vacancy report and labour-office support documents

Employers need the vacancy-report paperwork for the single permit, Blue Card, or standalone work-permit process and may also need to support the labour-office review with route-specific details.

05

Process

1

Choose the sponsor-backed route first

Match the case to the single permit, Blue Card, research, or special work-permit route before issuing sponsor documents, because the labour-office workflow changes with the route.

4

Stay available after approval

Once the residence is granted, the sponsor still needs to keep the actual work or research arrangement consistent with the purpose printed on the residence card.

06

Warnings

Warning

Blue Card lead-time guidance is inconsistent

Different EURAXESS Blue Card pages publish different pre-filing waiting periods after the vacancy report. Sponsors should verify the current operational rule with the competent authority before sequencing onboarding.

Warning

Do not rely on one old English duration summary

Published English pages disagree on the maximum duration of ordinary employment residence, so sponsors should align contracts and planning with the current legal basis and the specific police decision rather than a single overview page.
