Definition

A residence permit is an official authorisation granted by a country to a foreign national, entitling them to live within that country's territory for a defined period or indefinitely. Residence permits vary in scope: some include the right to work (combined work and residence permits), while others are purely residential (for family reunification or passive income). Temporary residence permits must be renewed and are typically linked to the purpose of stay; permanent residence permits (settlement permits) grant indefinite rights and are a step towards naturalisation.
