Qualification Recognition

The formal process by which a European country or authority evaluates and accepts a foreign academic degree or professional qualification as equivalent to a domestic one.

concept

Definition

Qualification recognition is the process whereby a host country's competent authority assesses whether a foreign academic degree or professional qualification is equivalent to the relevant domestic qualification. For regulated professions (such as medicine, law, engineering), formal recognition is mandatory before the applicant may practise. For the EU Blue Card and many work permit routes, applicants need at least a statement of equivalence or assessment of their qualifications. Key European resources include the ENIC-NARIC network for academic qualifications and Germany's anabin database and Statement of Comparability service (KMK).
