Working in Europe as an Accountant

General accounting roles are often unregulated. Statutory audit rights and protected titles require registration. The regulatory barrier is highest for statutory auditors.

Regulation status in Europe

Regulation varies by country and activity

This profession is regulated in some EU countries but not others, and the scope of reserved activities differs. Check the individual country guides to understand what registration or title-protection requirements apply where you intend to work.

Accountancy regulation is variable across Europe. General accounting, bookkeeping, and financial analysis roles are typically not regulated and accessible via standard work permits. However, statutory audit sign-off rights, use of protected titles (such as Wirtschaftsprüfer in Germany or Commissaire aux comptes in France), and certain other reserved activities require registration with the national professional body.

Permit routes

Relevant permit routes

For regulated accountancy roles (statutory audit, protected titles), the recognition procedure goes through the national professional body under the general-system procedure of EU Directive 2005/36/EC. For most commercial accountancy and finance roles, standard work permit routes apply without a recognition requirement.
