Working in Europe as a Teacher
Teaching is regulated in all EU countries. Recognition goes through state education authorities under the general-system procedure. Non-EU teachers face the same route without automatic recognition.
EU regulation
Regulation status in Europe
Teaching is a regulated profession in every EU member state. The competent authority is typically the state or national education ministry. EU Directive 2005/36/EC applies via the general-system procedure (not automatic recognition). Non-EU teachers go through the same general-system route. The process can be lengthy — particularly in federal states where authority is split between regions — and may include language requirements for classroom teaching.

Permit routes
Relevant permit routes
International schools hiring English-language teachers often operate under different regulatory conditions than state schools. For state-school teaching positions, recognition of foreign teaching qualifications is typically mandatory before employment. Language requirements for the classroom are a practical barrier in most countries regardless of the formal recognition outcome.
